FAQ Page – Old Beaver Gunsmith

Why we won't sell springs lighter than 1.5 lb for the Marksman trigger - and what to know about drop-safety, installation, warranty, and hunting use.

Can you make an even lighter spring than 1.5 lb?

Technically, yes – we could wind a lighter spring tomorrow. We don’t sell one, and here’s why: below roughly 1.3 lb on this trigger system, our drop tests start failing consistently. That’s not a guess – it’s what happens when we push spring rate past a certain point on the Marksman trigger. A trigger that can fire from a bump or a dropped rifle isn’t an upgrade, it’s a liability, no matter how good it feels on the bench. A few ounces of pull weight isn’t worth that trade-off – not for you, not for anyone standing near you.

Will this void my Ruger warranty?

Installing an aftermarket spring is a user modification, and Ruger’s warranty policy on user-modified parts is something only Ruger can speak to directly. What we can tell you: nothing about this install is permanent. The factory spring goes back in exactly as it came out, with the same tools, in under five minutes.

Is this spring drop-safe?

Every kit we sell has passed our standard test sequence – function, safety, bump, and drop – before it left our bench in that configuration. That said, “drop-safe” isn’t a property of a spring in isolation. It’s a property of the assembled trigger, on your specific rifle, after you install it. That’s why we walk you through running the same test sequence yourself after installation – every time, no exceptions.

Why 1.3–2 lb and not a single fixed number?

Two identical springs behave slightly differently depending on the individual trigger housing, how the Marksman adjustment screw is set, wear, and tolerances stacking up from the factory. We give you a tested range instead of a single number because that’s what actually happens across real rifles – not because we’re hedging.

Can I use this on a rifle I hunt with?

Depends on how you hunt with it. From a stand, off a rest, deliberate shots – plenty of hunters run this weight comfortably. Still-hunting, fast follow-ups, cold hands, thick brush, or a rifle that gets handed to someone else in camp – that’s exactly the scenario where a heavier factory-range trigger earns its keep. We’d rather tell you that upfront than sell you a spring that doesn’t fit how you actually hunt.

Do I need a gunsmith to install this?

Most people don’t – it’s a drop-in part with basic hand tools, no machining, no permanent changes to the housing. If you’re not comfortable working inside a trigger assembly, or you’re unsure after watching the install guide, that’s what a gunsmith is for. There’s no shame in that call – plenty of very good shooters make it.

What’s actually different between this and the factory spring?

One dimension of the spring – its rate. Everything else in the trigger – sear engagement, the adjustment screw, the three-position safety – is untouched, because none of that needed changing. We’re not redesigning the trigger. We’re replacing the one part that was keeping a well-engineered adjustable trigger from actually reaching its usable range.
